Introduction, character design, and more...
In the Roost is a 3-minute-long 2D animation that portrays the rise and fall of a Chinese subculture called Smart through the experience of an individual. The story is told in a nonlinear narrative style, with an old man and his pet rooster as the main characters. Once a member of the subculture, that was popular in China around 2008, the old man has become ordinary while retaining his distinctive mohawk hairstyle. In his seemingly mundane life, various encounters trigger memories of his rebellious youth, making him realize that he never truly conformed to societal norms.
